  • Check spring locks/retainers, valve-to-valve clearance and valve-to-piston clearance.
  • On engines produced from late 1977, the pitch diameter of the camshaft, the gear and the breather-valve gear was changed; these components are not interchangeable with earlier versions unless replaced as a set. Post‑'77 gear sets are identified by a machined circular groove on the outer face of the camshaft gear.
